Last night my hubby and I were invited to see a preview performance of The Scottsboro Boys at the Ahmanson Theatre. This bold new musical which has been nominated for 12 Tony Awards, was created by the masterminds behind Chicago and Caberet. The Scottsboro Boys centers around one of the most infamous events in American history: the case of nine African American men wrongly accused of a crime that they did not commit.
This entertaining show shocks and delights, reverberates with catchy music, inspired storytelling, innovative staging and extraordinary performances. The Scottsboro Boys musical adds levity, insight and upbeat toe tapping musical numbers to one of the most touted stories of our time.
Many of the musical numbers are clever and memorable, but the standout performance of the night came from actor Joshua Henry who played Haywood Patterson and ‘wowed’ the crowd with his powerful indelible voice and his charismatic stage presence. Given his stellar performance, it came as no surprise that he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role as Haywood for Best Lead Actor in a Musical.
