Last night, my close girlfriend Monique and I attended the Opening Night Performance of SISTER ACT, the Tony Award nominated musical comedy direct from Broadway. This uplifting entertaining show is playing the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood for a 3 week Limited Engagement now through July 28, 2013.
Based on the well-known feature film, SISTER ACT tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops decide to hide her in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
SISTER ACT is a super fun, upbeat and entertaining musical that makes you feel SO good. You just can’t help grooving in your seat and smiling while you watch this enjoyable performance. This show is produced by Whoopi Goldberg et al., with a musical score created by the legendary Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast) and features the captivating musical styles of Motown, Soul, Funk, Disco and Barry White inspired musical comedy. I absolutely loved the final act that featured a whole lotta blinged-out habits, SO sparkly and FUN!
I was very impressed with the lead actors and musical talent in the LA performance of this show, with the uber talented and powerful Ta’Rea Campbell (Book of Mormon, Lion King) as Deloris Van Cartier, the seasoned Hollis Resnik (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Les Miserables) as Mother Superior, the standout E. Clayton Cornelious (Wonderland, The Scottsboro Boys) as ‘Sweaty’ Eddie Souther, and the indelible voice of Lael Van Keuren (Sister Act) as Mary Robert.
Overall, SISTER ACT was a super fun, entertaining, makes-you-feel-happy show, with catchy musical numbers, a talented cast and a lighthearted story. I highly rec going to see it before the tour leaves LA.
