Sean Hayes Breathes Levity & Life into God at the Ahmanson Theatre

Act of God

Last week, I attended opening night of An Act of God at the Ahmanson Theatre and needless to say it was an ‘enlightening’ and entertaining evening of comedic theater. The talented, funny and affable Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) plays God in this a six-week limited engagement. In addition to Sean Hayes, the cast includes David Josefsberg (as Michael) and James Gleason (as Gabriel) and is written by 13-time Emmy Award winner David Javerbaum (head writer and executive producer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello. So as you can see, there is a lot of talent and experience behind this comedic endeavor.

In this clever and evocative show, God takes the form of Emmy Award winner Sean Hayes who is supported by his devoted angels, who have all descended upon Los Angeles to answer some of the deepest questions that have plagued mankind since Creation. It’s a laugh-out-loud show with a nice sprinkling of audience interaction in which God addresses topics and answers questions about Creation, Homosexuality, The Ten Commandments, and Politics to name a few.

Hayes is spot on with his witty repartee as God, and is especially funny when he goes off-script with his audience interactions and anecdotes. He touches on many hot topics in his 90 minutes on stage without missing a beat (and no intermission!) and his supporting cast perfectly frames the star and adds levity and authenticity to the scenario.  It’s a fun show, that makes you think about bigger issues and it handles heated topics with the perfect balance of humor and biblical innuendo.

If you are a fan of Sean Hayes’ witty humor and want to see a show that both makes you laugh and think, you won’t want to miss this one!

An Act of God is playing at the Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles at 135 North Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90012 now thru March 13th.
