A significant portion of women 40+ tend to struggle with Hormonal Acne, and in this post I want to help you understand some of the causes & offer some suggestions for how to treat it

40 Plus, Skincare, AcneI’ve partnered with AncEase to bring you this interesting and informative post about Hormonal Acne. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own

As many of you might have noticed, I have recently redesigned my blog with a refreshed clean modern look and a renewed focus on topics and content that is geared towards the lifestyle interests and needs of women 40 plus. With this renewed focus in mind, I am planning on publishing at least one new post per week on an informative topic that is relevant to women in the 40-60 age demographic.

To kick it off, today I am talking about Hormonal Acne, an issue that many women in their forties and fifties continually struggle with. Since I am not an expert on this topic, I have partnered with AncEase (the flagship product of the Herborium Group), an all natural botanical therapeutic supplement specifically developed to treat skin disorders including acne. For this post, I interviewed the Founder and CEO of Herborium, Dr. Agnes P. Olszewski, an expert in natural and botanical treatments. In the following post, we will discuss hormonal acne, explore the causes and the best ways to treat it. I hope you find it interesting and informative.

40 plus, skincare, hormonal acnePlease tell my audience a little bit about yourself and your professional/medical background and how you became interested in skincare and treating acne?

First, I would like to start off by saying we are very excited to introduce ourselves to your readers, and hope we can help many women and even their husbands or significant others, as well as their teens end their acne problem naturally.

I have a drug development and science background. A turning point for me to get involved with natural medicine was largely due in part to my international consulting projects with big pharma and the biotechnology sector that lead me to the realization of the richness and benefits of natural health alternatives that are safe, effective and validated and that are unfortunately available to American consumers on a very limited basis. So I founded Herborium, a BotanicalTherapeutics® company based on a new, innovative healthcare concept that combines science and nature. We’re bridging western standards and know-how with natural medicine science. I chose to focus on acne first because I saw friends, colleagues and even my own son suffer from acne, and I needed to find the solution. Obviously the fact that in the USA there is over 80 million people with acne only increased my motivation to find an answer.

Since many of my readers are women 40 plus who are dealing with a variety of age related skin concerns, one that I seem to be asked about more and more is Hormonal Acne. Can you tell us more about hormonal acne? What is it exactly and What are the primary causes of it?

Acne is a result of over stimulation of sebaceous glands and what happens after too much sebum (skin oil) clogs the pores. The major culprit in this over stimulation are male hormones (androgens). In other words, too many androgens sets off acne. You can consult with your physician and have your hormone levels tested. It is simple blood test that you can request from your doctor and unfortunately it not used often enough.

The medical community is still unclear as to the exact contributing factors for acne formation but the general belief is that hormonal imbalance is a major trigger in the formation of adult acne. Such factors as lifestyle, genetics, diet, stress and even certain medications work as additional facilitators, but hormonal balance remains the key factor.  This is important to understand when we talk about acne treatment, because changing those factors alone will not usually be sufficient enough to get rid of acne. Only a proper acne treatment combined with the adjustment of some of those other factors (like diet, sleep, stress or lifestyle) will support getting rid of an acne problem for good.

What are the symptoms/how is Hormonal Acne different it from other types of acne?

Signs that your acne may be hormonally induced include:

  • Adult onset acne, breakouts that appear for the first time in adults
  • Acne flare-ups preceding or coinciding with your menstrual cycle
  • A history of irregular menstrual cycles (indicating hormonal fluctuations)
  • Increased facial oiliness (sebaceous gland over secretion)
  • Hirsutism (excessive growth of hair, or hair in unusual places which is known to be induced by androgens)
  • Elevated levels of certain androgens in the blood stream

Hormonal acne may include all forms of acne too such as:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Papules
  • Pustules
  • Nodules
  • Cysts

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about hormonal acne?

The biggest misconception of all is that acne will go away on its own or can be “treated” with topical products or procedures. Most topical acne products are formulated to zap excess oil that tends to collect on the surface of the skin, leaving the source of the problem untreated. Most people with adult acne have combination skin, rather than exclusively oily skin, and the chemicals used to give teens a squeaky clean complexion are often too harsh for adult complexions and result in dryness, flakiness, more wrinkles and faster skin aging. And if you dry the skin too much, it will respond by increasing sebum production, which of course can lead to more acne.

AcnEase is a very unique and innovative product, can you tell us what it is and exactly how it works?

It is the first 100% botanical acne treatment that eliminates symptoms and prevents new acne from forming. It is different from anything else on the market, natural or not, since it actually breaks the cycle of acne without directly affecting the hormones and without any adverse effects. It works by mitigating the impact of hormones on the sebaceous glands and also has some anti-inflammatory properties. With a very high user success rate of 96%, it contains only powerful acne-fighting herbal extracts and NO chemicals, GMO’s, phytoestrogens, animal by products, sugar, gluten, dairy or nuts. It is developed for women and men of any age, with any type of acne and every skin tone. In addition to acne, it also reduces oily skin, redness, scaring and symptoms of rosacea. The minimum recommended treatment is one month, however depending on the severity of acne and how long you suffer from it (acne lasting over two years is a chronic condition), it can take up to 3- 6 months for someone to see the full results they want.

AcnEase has no known side effects, short or long term. It also does not interact with prescription medicines or most other nutraceuticals. People are rarely allergic to the ingredients, if they are we usually advise lowering the dose temporarily or taking AcnEase with food.

What final piece of advice would you like to leave my 40+ female audience with as it pertains to skincare and hormonal acne?

You might have be surprised to learn that acne is actually an internal issue that manifests itself externally. Scientifically, the only way to truly treat acne is from the inside! Try to look at your body as a whole system instead of just looking at the problem (acne) as an independent issue. Try sticking to an anti-inflammatory diet, and remember, acne does not go away on its own. It MUST be treated!

  1. Hi,

With your age, you really look young and healthy. I think this product is not meant for me because I’m still in my early 20’s but I know someone who will love this product, my mom. I will definitely let mom read this and recommend the product. For sure it will be effective for her too. Thank you for this informative post,
