I’m always skeptical about a movie being adapted for stage, some are hits and some misses, but I have to say that with multi-platinum recording artist Deborah Cox embodying Whitney Hosuton in the starring role of The Bodyguard at the Hollywood Pantages, you are in for a treat!
The Bodyguard is an award–winning musical based on the 90’s hit film of the same name. To refresh your memory about the storyline: Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer (played by the handsome and stoic Judson Mills) is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron (Deborah Cox) from an unknown stalker. This entertaining and slightly campy musical (because of the Stalker) is essentially a love story between a soul diva and her personal bodyguard and how he will stop at nothing to protect her.
The highlight of this musical stage adaptation of The Bodyguard is unquestionably the incredibly talented vocals of Deborah Cox. Her voice is powerful, captivating and pure, much like Whitney herself. And following in the footsteps of such an iconic superstar is no easy feat, but Cox totally slays the vocals and iconic songs from this classic movie. Rumor has it that she even sang with Whitney back in the day and she has also portrayed and sung Whitney’s songs in many shows and movies.
If you are a Whitney Houston fan and/or a fan of this classic movie, you will love the music, dancing and theatrical Broadway style staging of this show. And the best part is seeing iconic Whitney songs brought to life like ‘So Emotional’ and ‘Saving All My Love’, and ‘I Will Always Love You’ by such a stellar musical talent.
