I recently had the pleasure of attending opening night of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre and it is a beautiful tribute and an enlightening look into the life of this iconic disco diva. The show is fun, entertaining and filled with songs that so many of us know and love.

The show beautifully highlights Donna’s journey as young girl and a passion for singing who rose up the ranks of the gospel choir until she eventually achieved fame and recognition as the dance floor diva. Donna Summer became legendary for creating songs that made people want to get up and dance like “Love to Love You Baby” and “Bad Girls” and “Last Dance.” I grew up in the 80’s listening to so many of these fabulous songs and loved learning the story of the singer behind them.

However, what I enjoyed most about this show was that it told the story of Donna Summer’s life by casting three wonderfully talented actresses to portray the journey of this iconic star through the significant phases of her life. Oliva Elease Hardy portrayed Duckling Donna as a young girl with a magical voice and a desire to sing for others; Alex Hairston portrayed the feisty, naive and burgeoning Disco Donna and Dan’Yelle Williamson portrayed the seasoned, confident and successful Diva Donna. It was a captivating way to tell the story of this amazing woman’s life because it swept the audience up in her journey and took us on an entertaining disco-filled adventure of her life! I had such fun grooving in my seat throughout the show and then getting up and dancing during the last scene.
