Fresh Off Broadway, ‘Heisenberg’ is a riveting new play about an unlikely love story featuring Tony Award winners Denis Arndt & Mary-Louise Parker.
Earlier this week, my husband and I attended opening night of the incredibly captivating new play, Heisenberg at the Mark Taper in downtown Los Angeles. This exciting new play was created by visionary playwright Simon Stephens (renowned for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre Aug 2 – Sep 10, 2017) who is making his Taper debut with this sharply original play direct from Broadway in the Manhattan Theatre Club production.
The LA production features the amazingly talented 2017 Tony-nominated Best Actor Denis Arndt (The Night Alive, Basic Instinct) and Tony and Emmy Award winner Mary-Louise Parker (Proof, Weeds) reprising their stellar roles from the much acclaimed Off-Broadway production.
The story takes place in a crowded London train station, when Georgie (Parker) spots Alex (Arndt), a much older man, and plants a kiss on his neck. This electric encounter thrusts these two strangers into a fascinating tale of unexpected love, comical sparring and human connection. Parker and Arndt are such an unlikely romantic pairing, yet they have a surprising and intriguing sexual chemistry onstage. Parker is in rare form as a free spirited eccentric who is bold, uncensored and refreshing to watch.
What makes this intimate play incredibly powerful is that it takes place in a theater-in-the-round set-up with only two chairs, two tables and two seasoned actors who carry this show for eighty minutes without an intermission. This story taps into the relatable themes of love, loneliness, trust, hope, fear and the feelings and societal judgement of a younger woman being romantically involved with a much older man.
What I enjoyed most about this play was seeing two veteran actors sweep the audience up in their magic, angst and forbidden love. You almost feel like you are watching something that you shouldn’t be privy to and that’s exactly what makes it so good. The staging is refreshing yet simple, and the story and acting are incredibly complex and multi-layered.
Heisenberg is playing at The Mark Taper Forum in Downtown LA through August 6, 2017
