‘Jagged Little Pill’ is emotionally riveting & features Alanis Morissette’s iconic music. The staging, singing & dancing are SPECTACULAR!
Last week, I attended Broadway In Hollywood’s Opening Night of Jagged Little Pill based on Alanis Morissette’s seminal album from the nineties. And let me start of by saying, it was nothing short of spectacular and one the best musicals that I have seen in quite a long time! I absolutely loved it because it had all the elements that I want to see in a theatrical musical. It had a relevant, relatable and somewhat edgy story line, catchy memorable (and familiar) music, powerful and creative dance numbers and seasoned acting and singing.
Jagged Little Pill is a Tony and Grammy award winning musical that uses Alanis Morisette’s emotionally riveting music (like ‘You Oughta Know‘ and ‘Ironic’) to tell a powerful story (written by the award winning Diablo Cody) about a perfectly imperfect American family. On the surface, this family looks like they have it all together, however as we take a closer look, we learn that these characters are extremely flawed just like most of us. We see them dealing with real and relatable modern day issues like rape, drug abuse, marital problems, diversity, inclusion, bullying, peer pressure, sexuality and so much more.
The cast of US touring company of Jagged Little Pill is led by the uber-talented Heidi Blickenstaff who reprises her Broadway role as Mary Jane Healy, the burgeoning young talent Lauren Chanel as Frankie Healy, Chris Hoch as the stotic Dad and the incredible Jade McLeod as Jo, whose voice bore an uncanny resemblance to Alanis Morissette. Needless to say, this cast definitely showcased Broadway caliber talent.
Right from the start, this show sucked me in with its powerful, memorable music and riveting song and dance numbers executed by an incredible array of talented actors and dancers, even the background dancers got my attention, that’s how good the talent and choreography were! And the shows spectacular intense musical numbers took the audience on an incredible emotional journey of love, loss, heartache, pain, suffering, strength, wisdom, healing and catharsis. It was one of those rare shows that had all the right elements in place that made you feel like you were witnessing something magical and memorable!
