The hubby and I recently saw a fun and witty new play at the Mark Taper Forum in Downtown Los Angeles called Linda Vista created by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County). This entertaining and relatable modern themed play takes an honest and humorous look at a man in the midst of a midlife crisis.

Linda Vista features veteran actor Ian Barford in the leading role as Wheeler, a fifty year old man whose life has just come crashing down on him. As the the play begins, he is in the thick of a midlife crisis: His marriage is over, his job is boring and unfulfilling and he feels like the best years of his life are behind him. However, things start to look more promising and more complicated for Wheeler after he gets his own apartment, starts dating and having sex again.

Wheeler is a captivating and relatable self-deprecating man, who is quick to judge others rather than taking a long hard look at himself. Barford poignantly captures Wheeler’s midlfe angst and takes us on a realistic complicated, painful, and humorous journey with him. The play powerfully captures the emotions, frustrations and pain of a man in the the throes of a midlife crisis complete with dating a much younger woman who is clearly not right for him, as a last ditched effort to hold on to his youth.

Linda Vista is a wonderfully tragic comedy with a strong ensemble cast that powerfully transports you into someone else’s life and let’s you stew in the uncomfortableness of it all and that’s the beauty and brilliance of it!
