If you would like to laugh out loud and be thoroughly entertained this holiday season, then go see Something Rotten! at the Ahmanson Theatre in DTLA
My hubby and I attended the Opening Night of Something Rotten! at the Ahmanson Theatre in DTLA last week and we laughed out loud for the majority of the two plus hours of this entertaining, fun musical farce. Something Rotten! takes place during the Renaissance era and the regin of Shakespeare and theatrical dramas; music incorporated into live theater was unheard of! Enter the plight of Nick and Nigel Bottom (skillfully portrayed by Tony nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), who are brothers, struggling artists and playwrights who are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard” (portrayed brilliantly by Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal aka the amazing original Roger from Rent ).
Things dramatically change for the Bottom Brothers, when a local soothsayer foretells that the future of live theater involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time aka musicals. Breaking with conventional wisdom, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical called Omelette, and as you might imagine from the title alone, things go from bad to worse in this clever, silly, laugh out loud multiple Tony Award nominated musical.
You cannot help but smile and have a good time while watching Something Rotten! It is a fabulous and funny dose of theater and a clever ode to Broadway musicals. However, it is such a silly, ridiculous, laugh out loud piece of theater that it makes you wonder if maybe the writer is playing a joke on the audience. In fact, in reaction to how zany and over-the-top the show is, my hubby eloquently said, “Am I being ‘Punk’D?”
If you are a theater buff like myself and familiar with a vast number of Broadway musicals, then you are gonna love and totally ‘get’ this show, which is filled with clever references and twists on the music from many all time favorite musicals. If not, this show is still incredibly fun and entertaining and the perfect escape from all the hubbub that you might encounter this coming holiday season.
Something Rotten! is playing at The Ahmanson Theatre at The Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles now through December 31, 2017.
