Peter

If you are looking for something fun and festive to do with your family this holiday season, I highly recommend taking your family  to see Peter and the Starcatcher and the Ahamanson Theatre (the show is ideal for kids ages 10+.) This super fun and creative five-time Tony Award® winning play tells a version of the backstory about Peter Pan: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up?

In this imaginative play based on the best-selling Disney-Hyperion novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, the audience is taken on a fantastical journey through the epic origin of one of popular culture’s most enduring and beloved boy heros. The show asks the audience to suspend their disbelief and use their imagination to join Peter on his adventure of a lifetime.

What makes this show so enjoyable is both the magical storytelling and the clever and imaginative staging of this prequel to a childhood classic. This inspired play brilliantly portrays the novel which utilizes characters and iconic moments from the original story and brings them to life without fancy or elaborate sets or costumes. The set is intentionally barebones, with locations cleverly suggested rather than clearly defined so that the audience really has to use their imagination to ‘see’ the story. This show was unlike any that I have ever seen before because it really taped into the child within all if us. It was silly, fun, creative, colorful and original! Words don’t do it justice!

The Black Stach (a modern interpretation of Captain Hook) played by John Sanders (who also portrayed this character on Broadway) was hands down the standout actor in the show. His campy, over-the-top portrayal of Stache was phenomenal, not to mention his fabulous comedic timing and his knack for quirky physical comedy. His improv rant of ‘how he got his hook’ was so darn funny, I almost lost it!

I took my 10 year son and my best girlfriend and her daughter (age 9) to see this show and both of the kids really enjoyed it, especially the silly over-the-top antics (like men dressing a mermaids) and sight gags. However, a significant portion of the content and innuendos are cleverly geared towards adults and much of that content goes over kids heads, yet it did not hinder their enjoyment and only added to ours. This was such an entertaining fun ride and we were all grinning from ear to ear throughout. It’s a superb show, don’t miss out!
