Fun Home is an Award winning musical at the Ahmanson now thru April 1st. It’s an emotionally riveting story about family, love & loss & it’s a MUST SEE!

Fun Home, Broadway, Theater

Last week, my hubby and I attended Opening Night of Fun Home at the Ahmanson Theatre in DTLA and it was nothing short of spectacular and gut wrenching and emotionally riveting, and I loved every moment of it! This is my kind of theater – the kind of show that makes you really feel something! It’s one of those shows that you laugh at because it’s painfully honest and then cry along with it all at the same time. And it’s one of those shows that you will remember years later, it’s truly that good! For this reason and so many more, it’s not at all surprising that this musical received rave reviews on Broadway and won five 2015 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Fun Home is a refreshingly honest musical about family dynamics, about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes and realizing that we are all human and flawed in some way or another. The story is based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir of the same name, and it follows Alison at three different ages of her life as she explores the many mysteries of her childhood, not the least of which is her coming out in college as a lesbian and at the same time finding out that her father is a tormented, closeted homosexual as well.

What makes this show such a memorable stand out is that it exposes such raw and relatable emotions that we all struggle with like looking like a picture perfect family on the outside when in fact you are miserable and torn apart on the inside. And the way the show weaves the story telling between little, middle and grown-up Allison is incredible and so honest. It’s like seeing your voice of reason on your shoulder narrating your young life and naiveté and it’s painfully funny and real.

The staging and acting of the Ahmanson production of Fun Home is top notch too. I am a huge theater snob and I was lucky enough to see the original Tony Award winning cast perform this musical on Broadway and honestly the LA performance and cast measured up! And for me, that’s saying a lot because the Broadway actors were INCREDIBLE! The only thing that I liked better about the Broadway production was that they staged it as theater-in-the-round and that really added something to the show that the LA production was missing for me. In the theater-in-the-round Broadway production, you felt like you were part of the family more so, like you were inside their house and experiencing their struggles. And I missed that aspect, however I still found myself bawling during various moments of the LA show, so it still moved me to tears.

Fun Home, Theater

Needless to say, I HIGHLY recommend going to see Fun Home at the Ahmanson Theatre in DTLA before it closes on April 1, 2017. It’s up there among the best shows I have ever seen, and you don’t want to miss this one!
