The much raved about Tony Award Winning Musical, ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ arrives at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and it totally lives up to the hype!
Last Friday night, the hubbs and I were lucky enough to attend the star-studded opening night of Dear Evan Hansen at the Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles and trust me, it is totally worth the hype! This much raved about emotionally charged musical won six Tony Awards in 2017 including Best Musical and it is more than worthy of those esteemed accolades. In addition to the Tony’s, Dear Evan Hansen also features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy, Tony, and Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent and Next to Normal). So needless to say, you are in the hands of majorly talented creatives when you go see this amazing show.
Dear Evan Hansen is an emotionally riveting and profoundly contemporary musical about modern life, the impact of social media and technology, bullying, suicide, peer pressure, parenthood, social awkwardness, anxiety disorders and mostly just about being a teenager who desperately wants to feel normal and fit in with his peers. The story centers around a socially awkward anxiety stricken teenager, Evan Hansen (portrayed brilliantly by Ben Levi Ross) who while trying to fit in and connect with his peers, he gets caught up in a lie that completely transforms his life in wonderful ways that he never dreamed of but it is not without profound consequences.
Having seen the original Tony Award winning cast on Broadway, led by the amazingly talented Ben Platt in the title role, I can honestly say that the LA cast of the National Tour is outstanding. Ben Levi Ross portrays the quirks and twitches of Evan with almost as much skill and finesse as Ben Platt and the acting and musical chops of the rest of the LA ensemble is top notch. This is one of those not-to-be-missed musicals (and one of my all time favs) with catchy and emotionally relatable songs (thanks to the uber talented and brilliant Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) that take you on a powerful emotional journey of epic proportions. This is why I say run, don’t walk (and bring your teens too!) to see one of the limited LA performances before the tour leaves town at the end of November 2018.
Dear Evan Hansen is playing at the Ahmanson Theatre in DTLA now hrough Nov 25, 2018.
