Can you believe this theater buff has never had a chance to see the classic Broadway musical The King and I in all these years? Well, last week I finally had a chance to see it for opening night at the Hollywood Pantages and it was definitely worth the wait! Such a picturesque, epic, enchanting tale of of love, diversity and standing up for what you believe in.
The King and I is one of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most epic and well known masterpieces that tells the tale of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and a British schoolteacher (Anna) whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. This incredible story transports you in time to the culturally rich 1860’s Bangkok, where the King ruled the roost in a rigid and patriarchal manner and when a women arrives and pushes the cultural boundaries and traditions, an intriguing story unfolds.
This national tour of The King and I began it’s run at the renowned Lincoln Center Theater, where it won four 2015 Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical. It stars seasoned and talented Broadway actors Laura Michelle Kelly as Anna Leonowens and Jose Llana as the King of Siam. This iconic musical has a fabulous musical score which features many well-know Broadway tunes like “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.”
This production of The King and I at the Pantages is wonderful! The sets are stunning, the musical numbers are grand and thoroughly entertaining and the actors and singing and dancing are top notch! If you want to smile and feel good this holiday season, I definitely recommend that you take the whole family to this beautiful production of The King and I for an lovely evening of being transported to another time and place.

I am so glad you got to see it! I was lucky enough as a little girl to be able to see it when Yul Brynner was starring and… wow! Really magnificent!
