Don’t miss Katerina McCrimmon’s chutzpah-filled portrayal of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl at the Ahmanson in DTLA through April 28, 2024

With all of the buzz surrounding the revival of Funny Girl on Broadway, I was delighted to attend the Opening Night performance of Funny Girl on Tour at the Ahmanson Theatre in DTLA. This iconic beloved musical features one of the most iconic musical scores of all time created by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill and it is based on the updated book written by Harvey Fierstein which is based on the original story by Isobel Lennart, If you love grand, nostalgic style musicals of bygone eras, you are going to love this fabulous revitalized new production!

This uplifting revival truly dazzles with many picturesque dance numbers which incorporate some of the most well-known Broadway songs of all time like “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and “People.” This heartwarming comedy is the story of the larger-than-life, fun-loving Fanny Brice, a Jewish girl from the Lower East Side of NYC who dreamed of a being a STAR. In spite of all the obstacles that got in her way, she became one of the most beloved performers in history.

The highlight of this touring revival is the breakout leading lady and Broadway newcomer Katerina McCrimmon, who has an exceptional stage presence, incredible comedic timing and a powerful voice that rivals some of Broadway’s best. Her performance, chutzpah and belting out songs reminded me of of super stars like Lea Michele, Idina Menzel and even the OG Funny Girl Barbara Streisand!!
