Did you know that Skin Cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer? I’m writing this post in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, to raise awareness about causes, treatment & prevention.

Neutrogena, Skin Cancer Awareness I’ve partnered with Neutrogena to bring you this important post to raise your awareness about skin cancer & emphasize the importance of sun protection. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? If not, I am here to remind you that this month is all about raising our awareness about the primary causes of skin cancer, how important it is to get annual skin cancer screenings at you doctor’s office, how easy it is to treat it if it is detected early and most importantly, how simple and easy it is to prevent with the regular use of high quality sun protection products.

Memorial Day Weekend tends to be the official kickoff of the summer season, so just in time for all the fun sun filled activities that you and your family have planned this upcoming holiday weekend, I’ve partnered with with Neutrogena to share some important facts about skin cancer and sun protection and tell you why Neutrogena’s Beach Defense Collection is one of my favorites for protecting you and your family against the sun’s damaging rays.

Despite all that we know about sun protection and how easy skin cancer is to prevent, it is totally surprising to me that skin cancer continues to be a health epidemic in the U.S. as evidenced by the following:

  • On average, more than 350 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every hour
  • Just 2 painful sunburns during childhood significantly raises your risk of melanoma
  • 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers may be caused by sun exposure

When I was much younger, I worshiped the sun, use tanning beds and used little to no sun protection because I didn’t have the knowledge or awareness of how damaging the sun can be and I naively thought that being tan made me look better. However, I was recently diagnosed with a small skin cancer growth on the side of my nose and because I am hyper-aware of what is going on with my skin and get checked regularly, I had it diagnosed super early and it literally took moments to get rid of. And while I caught it early and it was easy to treat, nowadays this kind of cancer is very preventable with the regular use of sun protection.

As an adult, I view the regular use of sun protection as a learned healthy behavior much like brushing your teeth, wearing a seat belt or using a helmet when you bike or ski. Regular use of sunscreen keeps your skin healthy just like regular exercise keeps your heart healthy. And when it comes to teaching your kids these healthy habits, studies show that kids are more likely to adopt behaviors like applying sunscreen, if they see their moms regularly doing it themselves. Modeling this simple, healthy behavior early on is likely to reduce the chance of getting skin cancer later in life.

Neutrogena, Skin Cancer Awareness

In support of teaching healthy habits at a young age, Neutrogena has created an important and relatable #MimicMommy campaign to empower moms to instill safe sun behaviors in the next generation of children. To set the right example, make sure your kids see you applying sunscreen on yourself first and then, have them #MimicMommy. So smart and simple!

In the inforgraphic posted below, you can see some insightful statistics that pertain to the importance of regular and consistent use of sunscreen:

Neutrogena, Skin Cancer AwarenessSo in support of the regular use of sunscreen, I wanted to highlight Neutrogena’s Beach Defense Collection because it provides superior skin protection from the sun. The Beach Defense products are formulated with HELIOPLEX® Technology, which is a proprietary broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protective barrier that is clinically proven to help defend your skin against the harsh summer elements. What I love about the Beach Defense products are that the formulas are lightweight and non-greasy, absorb quickly, have a fresh non-sunscreen smell, they come in generous sizes to use on both your face and body and they are water and sweat resistant. I’m headed to Mexico for Memorial Weekend and I am taking this collection with me because I am confident that these products will offer me ongoing sun protection that I can trust.

Neutrogena’s Beach Defense Sunscreen Collection is available in the following five formulas:

  1. Hi,

This is a very informative post. I wear sunscreen daily whether winter or summer because these seasons are making my skin dry. However, it is best to wear sunscreen during summer because skin cancer might attack. Skin cancer can be prevented using sunscreen. I am using sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Thank you for sharing.
