In honor of Hair Loss Awareness Month, I’ve partnered with Women’s Rogaine® to help you better understand the causes of thinning hair & how to treat it
As many of you know, I am a hair over 50 (see what I did there?) and because of that I recently decided to dye my hair an ombre turquoise blue hue in order to show that I’m still hip and cool after 50. And the response has been amazingly positive, I’ve gotten so many compliments, a little bit of envy and mostly women saying that if I can do it, then maybe they can too. And that’s the reaction that I love most of all (and honestly why I started blogging) because by sharing my fashion and beauty discoveries, I am paving the way for women to take risks, try new things and look and feel like their best selves.
While I am healthy, feel amazing and take exceptional care of myself, as I have gotten older I have also noticed age-related changes in my skin and hair – specifically thinning hair.. The most noticeable changes in my hair have been that it is finer, thinner and a bit duller. I took note of the onset of these changes after giving birth in my mid-thirties and then have observed these shifts to be more noticeable in my mid-to-late 40’s.
Understanding Thinning Hair
For this post, I wanted to dig a little deeper into the causes of and treatment for thinning hair. Did you know that the average person is born with 100,000 hair follicles on their head, which are in a constant state of change and they begin to shrink as we age? And while the loss of 50-100 hairs a day is considered normal, consistent loss of over 150 hairs a day is considered significant and can indicate thinning hair. If you start to notice a difference in the amount of hair you find on your pillow, in the drain, or on your brush, you may be experiencing hair loss or thinning and you might want to look into it further. However, you are not alone because more than 1 out of every 4 women will experience hair thinning and hair loss at one time in their life or another.
What are the most common causes of Thinning Hair?
There are many potential causes for thinning hair, but genetics is usually the main culprit. This hereditary condition is called androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and it shortens the time that the hair spends actively growing and it causes your hair follicles to shrink due to genetics, hormones, and age. Women with hereditary hair loss experience a general thinning of the hair, with the most extensive hair loss occurring on the top of the head and along the part.
On the flipside, temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium, happens when stress, diet, a hormonal imbalance, or a traumatic event causes hair shedding and a temporary thinning of hair across the whole scalp. While the amount of time varies, once the imbalance has been corrected, the hair will return to its previous thickness.
There is also a third kind of hair loss that is less common called alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that is recognized by well-defined patches of hair loss, which may happen rapidly and can lead to complete hair loss.
How can I treat Thinning Hair due to genetics?
While there are many ways to go about treating thinning hair, one of the simplest and most affordable ways to treat thinning hair is with Women’s Rogaine® 5% Minoxidil Foam. This once-a-day easy to apply foam treatment helps you regrow thicker and more beautiful hair in just a few months; it has been clinically proven to regrow up to 25% more hair in 3 months, with new hairs growing in up to 48% thicker than before. Impressive!
What makes Rogaine® different is that rather than temporarily coating the hair with thickening agents, it distributes a combination of proprietary ingredients that deeply penetrate into the scalp and follicle in order to maximize hair growth and thickness. The minoxidil in Women’s Rogaine® works to boost hair follicle activity and hair protein production for long-lasting hair density, while Tricho-Prime Technology™ combines botanical extracts and an emollient to help maintain a healthy conditioned scalp and alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) to promote a natural skin exfoliation to help keep follicles open.
The best part is that Women’s Rogaine® 5% Minoxidil Foam is not an out of reach expensive, doctor’s office treatment that only women with a lot of money can afford, but in contrast it is super affordable and easily accessible at Target! So in other words, Rogaine® makes hair loss treatment within everyone’s reach and if you start using Women’s Rogaine® immediately at the earliest signs of hair thinning, you can address hair loss much more quickly and sustain optimal hair density and youthfulness. Don’t wait, this treatment is getting my Rave because it’s both effective and affordable.
