Moulin Rouge! The Musical Immerses You into the glitz, glam, ganduer and euphoria of the fabulous colorful roaring twenties
You guys know that I am a huge musical theater buff and regularly cover LA’s best shows here on my blog, so you know that I don’t say this lightly: Moulin Rouge! The Musical is hands down one of the best, most fun and entertianing shows that I have seen in LA in a very long time!! This show is a must see for several reasons that I will share below.
First and foremost, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is the winner of ten 2021 Tony Awards including Best Musical, two Drama League Awards including Outstanding Production of a Musical, five Drama Desk Awards and ten Outer Critics Circle Award Honor citations including New Broadway Musical. So needless to say this show has impressed the critics!
Second, this show is based on Baz Luhrmann’s dazzling award winning Moulin Rouge! movie from 20 years ago which had the most incredible and memorable soundtrack and that I still remember to this day! The musical features many of the fan favorite songs from the movie as well as freshening it up and modernizing by adding in some of the best pop hits from the last several years from artists like Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Adele and Britney Spears to name a few. Needless to say the music in this show is mindblowingly good and a great story telling mechanism!
Third, Moulin Rouge! The Musical beautifully captures the energy, the colors, the vibe, and the euphoria of the Moulin Rouge in Paris in the twenties. From the spectacular colorful costumes, to the energetic and authentic dancing brilliantly choreographed by the uber talented Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh, to the hypnotic musical orchestrations and arrangements by Tony Award winner Justin Levine, to the moody and sultry red set designs and the acting and characterizations of the type of people you would expect to encounter in Paris during that era, this show nails it!
And last but certainly not least, this show is exactly what we all need right now to lift our spirits and transport us to another time and place filled with magic, passion, hendonistic pursuits and all the glitz, grandeur and glory of the Moulin Rouge in Paris in the 1920’s! This show made me feel good from beginning to end, I was riveted by the story, the sets, the costumes and fabulous singing and dancing throughout!
Fellow Bohemians, treat yourself to a rip roarin’ good time and GO SEE Moulin Rouge! The Musical now playing through September 4, 2022 at the Hollywood Pantages or November 9 thru the 27th at Sergerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.
